Our client, in construction products space, is seeking an experienced Civil / Structural Engineer to join its team in a newly created and highly strategic position. This is a unique opportunity for a Professional Engineer to become the company’s primary in-house engineering authority, supporting its Calgary and Red Deer operations while playing a key role in establishing and developing an internal engineering function. Please note, this is an on-site role with some flexibility, located in Red Deer, AB, with Calgary also being considered.

Working closely with the manufacturing, production, estimating, and operations teams, the successful candidate will take ownership of structural design, engineering calculations, drawing reviews, and technical assessments across a diverse range of precast concrete and underground infrastructure products. The individual will also provide technical guidance during the estimating and tendering process, ensure designs are practical and manufacturable, and help establish engineering procedures, standards, and best practices. Over time, this role offers an excellent opportunity to build and lead an internal engineering team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary in-house Civil / Structural Engineer supporting the company’s Calgary and Red Deer operations
  • Take ownership of structural designs, engineering calculations, drawing reviews, and technical assessments across a variety of precast concrete products
  • Review, stamp, and sign off on applicable engineering work in accordance with APEGA requirements
  • Provide structural engineering expertise for products including burial vaults, underground utility structures, concrete pipe systems, and other precast concrete products
  • Support the Estimating team by providing technical guidance, reviewing project requirements, and assisting with tendering and project evaluations
  • Work closely with production and manufacturing teams to ensure engineering designs are practical, manufacturable, cost-effective, and compliant with applicable standards
  • Establish and implement engineering procedures, standards, processes, and best practices as the organization transitions engineering capabilities in-house
  • Provide technical assessments and engineering solutions to support product development, manufacturing, and operational requirements
  • Maintain a strong presence on the plant floor and build effective working relationships with production and operations personnel
  • Coordinate with external engineering consultants where required and gradually transition applicable engineering responsibilities internally
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders on project coordination, process improvements, and technical problem-solving
  • Contribute to the development and growth of the internal engineering function, with the potential to hire and mentor engineers and drafters as the team expands
Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with active registration through APEGA
  • Strong background in structural engineering and reinforced concrete design
  • Demonstrated experience with structural design, engineering calculations, drawing review, and technical assessments
  • Experience working with concrete, precast concrete, infrastructure, manufacturing, or construction projects is highly desirable
  • Precast concrete experience is considered a strong asset
  • Experience working within a structural or civil engineering consulting firm, concrete manufacturing organization, infrastructure company, or construction environment is considered an asset
  • Strong understanding of applicable engineering standards, codes, and regulatory requirements
  • Ability to provide practical engineering solutions that consider both structural integrity and manufacturing requirements
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with Engineering, Estimating, Production, and Operations teams
  • Highly organized and self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities independently
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing and plant-floor environment and engaging directly with operational teams
  • Ability to balance technical engineering responsibilities with stakeholder management, project coordination, and business needs
  • Demonstrated interest in developing leadership capabilities and building an internal engineering function is considered a strong asset
