Based in Winnipeg, the Director of Finance will lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals while overseeing the financial operations of one of the organization’s most successful and active portfolios. This role will work closely with operational leadership and executive management and will play a key role in supporting the continued growth, profitability, and success of the business.

Reporting directly to the President & General Manager, the Director of Finance will oversee accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, project accounting, audit, and operational financial analysis. This is a highly visible and hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced, project-driven environments and who understands the importance of partnering closely with operations teams to drive business performance.

The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in job costing, construction or project accounting, financial reporting, and operational finance leadership, along with a collaborative leadership style and customer-focused mindset.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute strategically to the ongoing development and execution of the organization’s business and growth plans.
  • Lead, mentor, and support the accounting and finance team while fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Provide clear direction, accountability, and ongoing coaching to accounting team members to support employee growth and development.
  • Partner closely with operational leaders, project managers, and executive leadership to provide financial insights and business support across active projects and operations.
  • Foster strong communication and alignment between finance and operations teams to support project success and overall profitability.
  • Oversee the preparation and delivery of accurate monthly financial reporting packages, forecasts, variance analysis, work-in-progress reporting, and operational financial analysis.
  • Support project and operational decision-making through detailed job costing analysis, project financial reporting, and forecasting.
  • Lead the development of annual budgets, business plans, and departmental financial objectives.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to financial processes, systems, internal controls, reporting, and operational efficiencies.
  • Support year-end audit activities including preparation of working papers, financial statements, and resolution of audit-related matters.
  • Collaborate with external auditors, banking representatives, legal counsel, and government agencies on financial and reporting matters.
  • Assist leadership with evaluating business performance, profitability, project risk, and financial opportunities across the portfolio.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline.
  • CPA designation required.
  • 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, ideally within construction, contracting, manufacturing, industrial, engineering, or project-based environments.
  • Strong expertise in job costing, project accounting, operational finance, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with operational and project management teams in a fast-paced business environment.
  • Strong understanding of work-in-progress reporting, project profitability analysis, and operational financial performance metrics.
  • Advanced Excel skills with experience building and working with financial models, project proformas, and reporting tools.
  • Strong systems knowledge and ability to improve financial processes and reporting capabilities.
  • Proven leadership experience managing, mentoring, and developing accounting teams.
  • Strategic mindset combined with a willingness to remain hands-on and involved in day-to-day operations when required.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to supporting both internal and external stakeholders.
