Software Asset Manager

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Software Asset Manager (Software Licensing & Compliance) to serve as the subject matter expert for enterprise Software Asset Management (SAM), software licensing, compliance, audits, renewals, and optimization. This is a hybrid role based in Edmonton, AB or Calgary, AB.

This is a software-focused IT Asset Management role, with primary responsibility for ensuring the organization's software usage aligns with contractual entitlements while identifying opportunities to reduce compliance risk and optimize technology spend.

The successful candidate will bring strong hands-on experience managing complex software licensing environments, including perpetual, subscription/SaaS, cloud, and AI licensing models. You will lead software reconciliations, true-ups, renewals, vendor audits, compliance remediation, and licensing optimization initiatives while providing clear reporting and recommendations to IT leadership.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead enterprise Software Asset Management (SAM) initiatives, including software audits, license reconciliations, true-ups, renewals, compliance remediation, and optimization projects.
• Serve as the subject matter expert for software licensing and SAM across enterprise projects and initiatives.
• Analyze software usage, entitlements, contracts, deployment data, and licensing terms to identify compliance risks, gaps, and cost-optimization opportunities.
• Manage software licensing and subscriptions across perpetual, SaaS, cloud, and AI environments, including Microsoft, Azure, and Microsoft Copilot.
• Lead and coordinate external software audits, working with vendors and internal stakeholders to validate licensing positions and resolve findings.
• Conduct regular software reconciliations to ensure deployments and usage remain aligned with contractual rights and obligations.
• Identify and implement opportunities to optimize software spend through license harvesting, reassignment, subscription optimization, utilization analysis, and renewal planning.
• Review software agreements and communicate contractual requirements, usage rights, risks, and mitigation strategies to business partners.
• Develop dashboards, reports, and executive summaries that provide visibility into software compliance, licensing costs, utilization, risks, and optimization opportunities.
• Develop and improve Software Asset Management processes, controls, policies, and practices.
• Research emerging software licensing and technology trends and provide recommendations to inform policy, process, and technology decisions.

Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on Software Asset Management experience, with a strong focus on software licensing, compliance, and entitlement management.
• Demonstrated experience with software license reconciliations, audits, true-ups, renewals, and/or compliance remediation.
• Strong understanding of software licensing models, contractual terms, entitlement management, and software compliance.
• Experience managing SaaS, cloud, and/or AI licensing and subscriptions.
• Microsoft and/or Azure licensing experience is strongly preferred.
• Experience with enterprise Software Asset Management and discovery platforms such as Ivanti, Flexera, ServiceNow, Snow Software, USU, or similar tools. Ivanti IT Asset Management and Ivanti Endpoint Manager are considered assets.
• Strong Excel skills and experience with Power BI or similar reporting/analytics tools.
• Experience identifying and implementing software cost-saving and license optimization opportunities.
• Ability to interpret software agreements and communicate licensing requirements, risks, and mitigation strategies.
• Strong analytical, investigative, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the ability to explain complex licensing concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• CSAM, CITAM, or similar Software/IT Asset Management certification is strongly preferred.
• ITIL v4 Foundation or higher is preferred.
• Knowledge of ISO 19770 or other IT Asset Management/SAM standards is an asset.
• Post-secondary education in IT, Business, Computer Science, or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.

What You'll Bring
The ideal candidate is a SAM/licensing specialist rather than a general IT asset or hardware asset manager. You are comfortable working with complex licensing agreements, reconciling entitlements against actual usage, leading vendor audits, identifying compliance risks, and translating data into actionable recommendations for IT leadership.

You will be successful in this role if you can move comfortably between licensing data, vendor contracts, compliance requirements, technology stakeholders, and executive-level reporting.
