Our client, a leading Canadian retail organization, is seeking an experienced Senior Manager, Commodity Tax (Real Estate Focus) to join their team in Downtown Toronto, ON or Brampton, ON. Please note, this is a hybrid role requiring 4 days in-office and 1 day remote.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Commodity Taxes, this is a high-impact role responsible for providing expert-level indirect tax support across complex real estate transactions and associated corporate entities. It is a highly autonomous role with significant exposure to senior leadership and strong potential for future advancement into a Director-level position within approximately 2 years, depending on performance and business needs.

This role is best suited for a self-sufficient commodity tax professional with strong real estate experience who can operate independently in a large, complex corporate environment.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $110,000 – $140,000
  • Bonus eligibility (to be confirmed)
  • 3 weeks vacation (flexibility may be considered for strong candidates)

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead indirect tax compliance (GST/HST/QST/PST) for corporate entities within a complex real estate structure
  • Oversee and/or review preparation and filing of commodity tax returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Canadian tax legislation
  • Provide advisory support on real estate transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, and structuring considerations
  • Analyze and apply tax elections (e.g., joint venture elections, Section 167 elections) as they relate to real estate activities
  • Act as a key resource for CRA and provincial tax audits, including coordination of responses and supporting documentation
  • Support broader corporate entities with indirect tax guidance on an as-needed basis
  • Review financial systems, controls, and reporting processes to ensure proper tax treatment and compliance
  • Partner with Finance, Legal, and Operations teams to identify tax risks and support business decisions
  • Drive process improvements related to tax reporting accuracy and internal controls
  • Operate as a subject matter expert with minimal oversight in a complex, large-scale corporate environment

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in commodity tax, with a strong focus on real estate-related tax matters (must-have)
  • Strong understanding of GST/HST/QST/PST legislation and application
  • Experience in a large, complex organization with multiple entities preferred
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • University degree in Business or Accounting
