Financial Controller

Our client, a leading organization in the energy sector, is seeking a Finance Controller to join their growing team in Oshawa, Ontario.

Please note that this is a fully on-site position requiring attendance in the office 5 days per week.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as a trusted financial advisor to senior leadership, providing strategic guidance on financial management, planning, forecasting, and operational performance.
• Lead and mentor a team of 5-10 finance professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development.
• Oversee monthly financial reporting, forecasting, budgeting, variance analysis, and year-end close activities.
• Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and completeness of financial records while maintaining strong internal controls and governance practices.
• Identify financial risks and opportunities, providing proactive recommendations to support business objectives.
• Partner with stakeholders across the organization to support business planning, investment decisions, and financial performance management.
• Prepare and analyze business cases, financial models, and strategic recommendations for leadership review.
• Act as the primary finance liaison between business units and corporate finance functions, including Tax, Planning, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Audit.
• Support the implementation of financial policies, processes, and systems that align with organizational goals and best practices.
• Present financial results, forecasts, and business insights to senior leaders and key stakeholders.

Qualifications:

• CPA designation (or internationally recognized equivalent) in good standing is required.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• 8-10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
• Demonstrated experience managing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cost reporting, and variance analysis within a complex organization.
• Strong understanding of internal controls, risk management, audit processes, and financial governance.
• Proven experience leading and developing high-performing finance teams.
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to professionally challenge assumptions and influence decision-making.
• Experience within utilities, energy, nuclear, mining, automotive, manufacturing, or other capital-intensive industries is considered a strong asset.
• Strong business acumen with the ability to balance strategic thinking and hands-on execution.
• Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Must-Haves:

• CPA designation (or equivalent international designation).
• 8-10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience.
• Leadership experience managing teams and partnering with senior stakeholders.

Nice-to-Haves:

• Experience within utility, energy, nuclear, mining, automotive, or other capital-intensive industries.
• Experience supporting large-scale operational or project-based environments.
• Exposure to complex forecasting, budgeting, and business case development processes.
