Aplin has partnered with a large public sector organization to recruit a Senior Cost Estimating Engineer based in Calgary.
This is an Intermediate to Senior Cost Estimating Engineer- Class 5 to Class 1 -> horizontal, vertical, and specialty projects.
The Department is responsible for the design and construction of the majority of its capital investment program. The cost estimating service provides valuable support to project delivery teams, ensuring accurate and transparent information is used in the planning and execution of critical infrastructure projects.
This 12-month contract position will support and contribute to various cost estimating initiatives under the guidance of the Cost Estimating Engineer, supporting key deliverables across the capital program.

This 12-month contract position will support and contribute to various cost estimating initiatives under the guidance of the Cost Estimating Engineer, supporting key deliverables across the capital program.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and provide recommendations for existing cost estimates, methodologies, and tools ranging from Class 5 to Class 1 for a wide range of infrastructure projects – vertical, linear, and specialty.
- Assist the Infrastructure Services Department with various tasks related to project and program estimates, estimating methodology, and frameworks related to capital project work.
- Assist with developing, assessing, and updating current estimates, and help develop and implement more standardized 10-Year Estimates and best practices (e.g., consistent key assumptions, breakdown structures, Owner’s costs, etc.) to help ensure enhanced consistency and accuracy across 10-Year Capital Investment Plans.
- Collaborate with Project Managers and other stakeholders on various high-priority capital projects as it relates to providing accurate, transparent, and valuable project cost estimates and other deliverables.
- Support and promote estimating service excellence within the Business Unit and across other teams in the organization.
- Intermediate/Senior Project Engineer with at least 3 to 5 years of cost estimating experience across different estimate classes on a range of construction projects (horizontal, vertical, specialty).
- Strong working knowledge of cost estimating methodologies, industry standards, and best practices.
- Familiar with project management and estimating principles and guidelines (PMI, AACEI, etc.).
- Excellent technical writing and presentation skills.
- Strong collaboration, customer service, organizational, and communication skills, along with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and balance competing priorities under tight timelines while also working collaboratively with multiple counterparts.
- Ability to co-locate a minimum of 3 days per week (Monday to Thursday) in Calgary.
- Available to work a minimum of 35 hours per week.
