Position Overview
The Underwriting Manager plays a key role in guiding the underwriting team to deliver a seamless, efficient, and client-focused experience from application to policy issuance.
This role combines leadership, operational excellence, and technical underwriting expertise — ensuring every case is handled with precision and care. The successful candidate will also partner with senior leadership to grow a new revenue stream by extending the firm’s underwriting services to external agents and brokers.

Key Responsibilities Underwriting Leadership
  • Oversee the complete underwriting process to ensure accuracy, compliance, and proactive case management.
  • Conduct pre-underwriting reviews to optimize case outcomes.
  • Provide expert guidance on complex or impaired risk cases and support advisors with accurate application completion.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of carrier guidelines, medical terminology, and financial documentation to improve submission quality.
  • Identify and resolve potential challenges quickly to maintain workflow efficiency.
Process & Relationship Management
  • Continuously refine underwriting processes to enhance efficiency and elevate client experience.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with carriers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Coordinate medical exams, tele-interviews, and client follow-ups with professionalism and accuracy.
  • Partner with carriers and internal stakeholders to ensure clear, timely communication.
  • Collaborate with leadership to expand underwriting services to external partners.
People Development & Team Culture
  • Lead, coach, and mentor a team of Underwriting Associates and Specialists.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and growth.
  • Set clear performance expectations, monitor progress, and celebrate achievements.
  • Encourage innovation and support continuous learning and professional development.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
  • Ensure compliance with all company, privacy, and regulatory standards.
  • Promote diligence, accuracy, and confidentiality across all documentation and communication.
  • Maintain rigorous quality control throughout the underwriting lifecycle.
Qualifications
  • Certificate or Diploma in Business Administration, Insurance, or a related field.
  • LLQP license required.
  • 3–5 years of experience in life insurance underwriting, case management, or new business operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of life insurance products, underwriting principles, and risk assessment.
  • Proficiency with carrier systems, CRM, and case management software.
  • Proven leadership or mentoring experience.
  • Professional designations such as FLMI, ACS, AALU, or CLU are considered assets.
