Aplin has partnered with a Winnipeg-based client looking for a Corporate Controller who is as comfortable diving into spreadsheets as they are advising ownership. Reporting directly to the business owners, this role involves leading all aspects of the accounting and finance function while actively participating in the day-to-day work. You’ll play a critical role in building scalable systems, delivering insightful reporting, and ensuring compliance and control as the organization continues its trajectory of growth.

About the Opportunity
This is a roll-up-your-sleeves leadership opportunity for an experienced Corporate Controller to join a fast-growing, Manitoba-based group of companies serving the construction and infrastructure sectors across Western, Eastern, and Northern  Canada. Known for its entrepreneurial spirit, strong client partnerships, and commitment to operational excellence, the organization is seeking a Controller who can contribute at both a strategic and operational level. You won’t just manage the numbers—you’ll build the models, post the entries, and drive the financial engine forward with a hands-on approach.

Key Objective
  1. Build and maintain a robust financial and management reporting system that delivers timely, accurate, and actionable information.
  2. Act as a hands-on financial leader and advisor by analyzing results, solving problems, and helping drive business performance.
  3. Strengthen internal controls, processes, and compliance as the company grows and diversifies.
Core Responsibilities
Financial Management
  • Handle day-to-day accounting operations across multiple entities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end processes.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and project-specific reporting packages.
  • Coordinate and execute the year-end close and audit process in partnership with external accountants.
  • Prepare and file tax returns and remittances, working with external tax advisors as needed; liaise directly with the CRA and Ministry of Finance.
  • Draft, maintain, and refine accounting policies and procedures to ensure strong internal controls and consistency across companies.
  • Apply ASPE standards and research technical accounting issues related to complex transactions or strategic initiatives.
  • Track and monitor financial performance across divisions; flag emerging trends or variances to leadership.
  • Take the lead on budgeting and forecasting, building models, and collaborating with operational leads to drive alignment and accuracy.
  • Lead and mentor a small team of accounting staff while directly contributing to high-volume and time-sensitive financial tasks.
Financing & Treasury
  • Manage day-to-day banking, cash flow, and treasury functions, ensuring visibility and stability across all business units.
  • Develop tools to project short- and long-term liquidity and funding requirements.
  • Review and help implement liability, bonding, and insurance programs.
  • Support compliance with debt covenants and help maintain relationships with financial institutions.
Strategic Contribution
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including project managers, consultants, auditors, and legal advisors.
  • Assist in the review and negotiation of contracts, financing agreements, and asset purchases.
  • Work closely with owners and strategic leaders to build dashboards and performance metrics that support data-driven decisions.
  • Regularly present financial updates and strategic insights to ownership and senior decision-makers.
What You Bring
  • CPA designation (CA, CMA, CGA) with strong technical accounting knowledge and practical experience across all facets of finance.
  • Hands-on experience managing full-cycle accounting in a multi-entity environment—preferably in construction, manufacturing, or similar sectors.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial systems, with the ability to build financial models and reporting tools from the ground up.
  • Track record of rolling up your sleeves in a lean team, balancing leadership with execution.
  • A proactive, analytical, and curious mindset—always looking for ways to improve systems and solve problems.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the confidence to present to ownership and work cross-functionally.
