David Aplin Group, one of Canada's Best Managed Companies, has partnered with our client; a Canadian subsidiary of a global civil engineering construction company to recruit a ‘Superintendent’. Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Superintendent will direct field construction activities and personnel to insure that the assigned areas of responsibility meet project budget, schedule, and safety objectives. Projects will vary in size, and location throughout Canada.

The Role:

The Superintendent will maintain frequent contact with clients, client representatives, union representatives, and professional and technical support personnel.
 
Procurement & Construction:

  • Outline to PC all required equipment, labor, and material a minimum 1 week in advance. In rare circumstances an emergency purchase may be required and is to be coordinated with PC to ensure it is tracked and coded.
  • Regularly monitor all equipment on site and work with PC to ensure unused equipment is returned immediately.
  • Review and analyze all contract drawings and specifications. Review and analyze all shop drawings prior to implementation on site.
  • Manage all Foreman and Workers on site so that they are aware of their task each day and ensure that the work is executed. Daily tasks are to be prioritized to ensure the Schedule Critical Path is maintained. Manage man hours for each task as per budget.
  • Continually monitor the site to ensure all workers remain on task and maintain productivity.
  • Perform layout of any contract dimension including but not limited to; limits of demolition, grading, formwork, etc.
  • Relay any technical problems regarding the contract documents to PC. If PC is unable to answer question immediately, ensure an answer is provided by PC/PM as soon as possible to ensure work can continue.
  • Perform Daily “Tool Box Meetings” with the assistance of Worker Site Safety Representative to ensure all job specific safety hazards are identified, outlined and mitigated (and that work crews are fully briefed with respect to risks and mitigation measures).
  • Enforce that all PPE and H&S regulations are being met by all employees on site.
  • Perform frequent audit per week of work site to ensure that Health & Safety Requirements are being met.
  • Any Minor infractions should be corrected immediately. Any Major infractions observed should be brought to the attention of PC and PM. Safety Department then can be consulted as a Team if required.
  • With assistance from Safety department and PM will interact with any regulatory body regarding safety infractions and corrective actions.
  • Analyze and understand project schedule prepared by PM. Provide input of feasibility and constructability to PM.
  • Assist PC in preparing 3 week look ahead schedules. At this time all required equipment, labour, and material required for the upcoming activities should be outlined.
  • Continually consult with PC & PM to ensure the work remains on track.
  • Relay to the PM and ongoing delays or potential future delays as soon as possible and assist in developing potential mitigation measures.
 Quality Control:

  • Ensure all work performed on site meets quality standards set out by contract documents.
  • Responsible for first layer of control of compliance within our Quality Control plans.
  • Ensure individuals implement and follow all QC measures and all QC requirements are maintained during the life of the project. For example: The use of correct equipment or maintenance of curing requirements etc.
  • Assist PC in preparing Daily Work Records (DWR) for each day. Maintain a separate Project Journal for cross referencing DWR.
  • With the assistance of the PC maintain Site Copy of Contract Documents to ensure all copies are updated to the latest version and any changes are clearly noted and brought to the attention of the workers. Signing Authority for Site Instruction Notices acknowledging receipt.
 Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years as a superintendent in heavy civil construction.
  • Train the trainer and other supervisory training considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with MTO/AT contracts considered and asset.
 
Project location will vary geographically, depending on work on hand. This position requires extension travel, and working from remote locations.
