Our client is one of the top leaders of their industry and boast of employees that truly take pride in what they do. Due to an upwards trend in their business and company’s vision they are in need of bringing in a Sr. R&D Leader to support their Product Development team. Reporting to the R&D Director you will lead the development of new and old product from the designing stage to the launch with continuous hands on involvement and direction at every step.

  • Research, formulation and development of new products within time, cost and processing requirements
  • Provide for the design, sourcing of ingredients, product specifications and overall on floor test and trialing process while managing costs.
  • Maintenance and overseeing of the on-floor test, trial and production planning process including documentation responsibilities.
  • Formulation of proof of concept samples for new products.
  • Ingredient functionality management and recipe creation within processing parameters.
  • Presentation and preparation of samples and specifications for sign off.
  • Review of formulation and process parameters to ensure product quality.
  • Development of methods and control procedures for ingredients, raw materials and finished goods.
  • Troubleshooting activities when the need arises for optimum product quality and efficiency.
  • Investigating and reporting technical concerns which could negatively impact the company.
  • Provide technical support to external and internal customers (Customers, Sales, QA and Ops)
  • Sourcing and investigating of new ingredients for potential alteration to existing or future products.
  • Coordinate annual SR&ED tax credit submission on a per project basis.
  • Conduct reviews on project assignments with the director as needed and not less than weekly.
  • Maintain Kosher and BRC standard requirements.

  • Minimum 3 years Supervisory experience
  • Degree in Food Science or Food engineering with a strong functional Baking Science background (minimum 5 years bakery/food manufacturing experience)
  • Experience with leading new bakery products through concept, prototyping, trialing and commercialization within an automated high-speed bakery environment (frozen bakery experience preferred but not essential)
  • Very strong technical skills (clear track record of DOE, CI work and innovation projects)
  • Recipe / Formulation and raw material knowledge / experience apply the scientific method and experimental design principles
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Displayed discipline and process to experimentation and learning – “learn the most in the least amount of time with the least amount of cost”
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), Sharepoint, ERP systems
  • Working knowledge of Canadian and US food standards and regulations
  • Knowledge of Cakes, Icings, Fillings, Toppings, Couvertures and Coatings
  • Must have a strong customer and achievement orientation with a tenacity to take action and drive for solution
  • Ability to multi task in fast pace environment.
  • Exceptional understanding of food ingredient chemistry and principles.
  • Familiarity with standard laboratory methods for food and ingredient analysis
  • Demonstrated ability for creative problem solving
  • Proven Continuous Improvement track record
  • Ability/willingness to travel up to 30% of the time
