David Aplin Group, one of Canada's Best Managed Companies, has partnered with our client, one of the leading manufacturers of interior and exterior doors, wood, vinyl, and aluminum windows to recruit a National Logistics Manager based in Toronto, Ontario.

Under the general supervision of the VP of Operations, the Logistics Manager is responsible for managing the strategic sourcing activity for multi-mode carrier contracts, providing guidance for selection of logistic vendors and transportation solutions, analyzing and determining optimum distribution and delivery strategies, supporting operations management in the successful execution of product delivery, leading relationships with key transportation and logistics providers, and transforming delivery and distribution processes into best-in-class across the country.

The Role:
  • Manage the production schedule that ensures efficient and accurate manufacturing consistent with established capacities and constraints of the production lines.
  • Plans and coordinates the administration of the process of receiving sales orders and the conversion into picking orders.
  • Negotiates rates with carriers and manages freight costs. Develops new and existing carrier relationships.
  • Plans delivery by organizing truckloads and routing schedules while determining optimal carrier based on load origin and destination.
  • Oversees inbound and outbound shipment deliveries for the customer, and coordinates with sales, transportation, shipping and receiving to include planning, documentation, and procedure control.
  • Oversees the preparation of delivery documents for truckers.
  • Acts as first point of contact to rectify issues with carriers, drivers, shipping/receiving, sales, transportation, as well as vendors and customers.
  • Plans and coordinates export shipments, to include container/vessel scheduling, licensing, tariffs and import fees.
  • Maintains files on all customer shipments and associated documentation.
  • Learns and applies product and logistical knowledge to enhance logistical efficiency and personal professionalism.
  • Works with supply chain/sourcing group on space availability, scheduler appointments, line up back haul and communicates pertinent information.
  • Ensures that reporting and communications to management are frequent and bi-directional, including timely preparation of reports.
  • Remains knowledgeable and up-to-date on changes and developments in product lines and competitor businesses and industries.
The Ideal Candidate:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics or related field. Minimum 5-7 years at the manager level in logistics/transportation role.
  • Subject knowledge: strong background knowledge in transportation contracts and tariffs.
  • Ability to gather data efficiently and the skill to apply logical analytical thought to business issues.
  • Experience working with direct and indirect reports to achieve positive operational change.
  • Must be able to utilize basic MS Office Programs (Word, Excel) and adapt quickly to other support systems (ERP, data mining, optimizers). 
  • Working knowledge of industry-leading TMS systems a plus.
  • Experience in a manufacturing facility involving Continuous Improvement methodologies strongly desired.
  • Require deep knowledge of transportation routes and carriers across Western Canada.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written and communication skills; as this position will act as primary contact with carriers and/or trucking dispatchers and drivers, and maintain ongoing and new carrier relationships.
  • Must be self-motivated, confident, positive and professional when dealing with both internal personnel and external customers/carriers.
  • The ability to thrive in a constantly changing and complex environment and consistently meet tight timelines.
  • Must possess fundamental product technical aptitude and knowledge, analytical skills, and be detail oriented. 
  • Must possess the ability to work well in a team environment as well as under minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards and compliance related to the position.
  • Travel may be required.
