Providing structural, diagnostics, civil, water resources, traffic, transportation engineering, and parking consulting services. The Building Sciences Group has an immediate opening for a senior-level strategic hire, which will focus on building, leading and directing the Building Sciences Team in Toronto, Ontario. The Managing Director will be responsible for developing each of the four practice areas within the group: Parking garage assessment and repair; Building Enclosure Consulting; Restoration/Renovation; Forensics/Litigation.

The Role:

In this role, the Managing Director is responsible for all aspects of the Building Science/ Diagnostics services for the Toronto office, including such activities as design and production, client management, personnel management, financial management, and business development. Coordinates work and/or various initiatives with other offices and with corporate support groups. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Building Science/ Diagnostics Group.

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Manages staffing needs, workload distribution, project resources, and budget for new and existing projects
  • Prepares staff, resources, and budget for upcoming projects
  • Coordinates workload sharing with other offices
  • Monitors progress of each assigned project and participates in monthly meetings with
  • Executive Director and Operations Manager regarding financial status, collections and quality management
  • Maintains tracking systems, including input into group-wide tracking systems for all projects and prospects in the office
  • Assigns the project manager to oversee projects and helps select support staff
  • Evaluates and recommends appropriate assessment techniques, repair strategies, specifications and designs
  • Monitors and reviews project profitability through financial reports and financial review meetings
  • Interfaces with project managers to ensure quality control procedures are followed
  • Prepares and submits proposals
  • Builds relationships with current and potential clients
  • Benchmarks the fees and capabilities of competitors
  • Attends professional meetings to interact with potential clients for office
  • Sets specific assignments for direct reports that are in line with project goals
  • Develops and coaches assigned personnel to systematically assure the highest quality service

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate should have experience leading a team of senior and graduate consultants, including technical oversight and direction, ability to assist in the development of an appropriate training program specific to the practice, and experience coaching and developing younger staff. This senior professional should possess a comfort level with and have the willingness to participate in business development activities, including the ability to lead project pursuits, develop new opportunities, and possess significant experience developing proposals, the scope of services, and fees for diagnostic, forensics, and building enclosure projects. In addition, the Managing Director should be prepared to and have the ability to travel within Canada and the US. This individual should be ready to hit the ground running with a strong desire to meet the challenges of expanding a new and growing practice.

Minimum of 10 years’ experience in technical, project management, and client development experience in parking garage restoration, restoration/renovation, forensics/litigation, building enclosure design, building façade restoration and roofing, understanding of building science and thermal analysis concepts, as well as knowledge of modeling building performance and sustainability.

  • Professional Engineer in the resident province and ability to obtain licensure in other provinces.
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in one or more of Civil/Structural Engineering, Architectural
  • Engineering, Architecture with an emphasis in Structural Engineering, Building,
  • Science/Building, Enclosures/Historic Preservation.
