David Aplin Group, one of Canada's Best Managed Companies, has partnered with our client, a Saskatchewan-grown industry-leading custom metal fabricator servicing the needs of the power generation, mining, construction, government, oil and gas and petrochemical industries to recruit for a Manager of Project Management to support their growing operations in Oxbow, SK.

The Role:

  • Provide leadership, coordination, and management of project management processes and functions from the Proposed Design and Bidding Stage through to fabrication and on-site construction while ensuring the projects remain on time and within budget;
  • Lead/coach/support Project Managers, Project Teams, Engineers, and Field Staff regarding oversight of specification management and technical standards;
  • Assign duties to the project team and deliver necessary technical and leadership assistance to ensure compliance with project budget, criteria, and deadlines;
  • Manage the activities of the project team to support steady workflow, maximum production, compliance with deadlines, regulatory requirements and efficiency of operations;
  • Anticipate problems and proactively consult with managers and directors to address issues that may hinder the success of a project. Develop and implement corrective strategies and present solutions to affected groups such as sales, engineering, production, procurement, and construction;
  • Establish and maintain the organizational structure of the department in line with project requirements;
  • Monitor direct report’s performance against goals to ensure that progress is being made, and take corrective action as needed;
  • Develop, evaluate, and maintain key processes and procedures for the project management department to support effective delivery of every project with the goal of exceeding or achieving gross profit margins;
  • Provide leadership to actively monitoring customer satisfaction during all phases of projects;
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of budget, schedules, project scope requirements, project deliverables for all projects within the Project Management Office;
  • Review bid packages/proposals with experts in engineering, design/detailing, estimating, production and construction in efforts to ensure competitive bidding;
  • Participate in pre-award contract negotiations and bid reviews.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Minimum of 10 years of steel fabrication and/or construction management experience complimented by 5 + years of mid-level or higher project management experience overseeing complex projects;
  • Demonstrated a track record of success managing major high-value projects with responsibilities including quality, scheduling, and budgeting. Full cycle project management experience is essential complimented by a clear understanding of project management best practices;
  • Significant successful experience leading and managing project managers;
  • Experience with project P&L management including the setup and management of functional reporting mechanisms, contract reviews, and organization of all contracts, maintenance, and sub-contract management planning and estimating;
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a post-secondary mechanical engineering degree or diploma. Candidates with a combination of steel fabrication project management and complimentary post-secondary education may also be considered;
  • PMP designation is considered a strong asset;
  • Competency with construction methods, contingency planning, value-added techniques complimented by a strong working knowledge of structural steel fabrication, connections and erection practices;
  • Proven personnel management and strategic planning experience;
  • Unquestionable personal and professional integrity complemented by a drive to deliver exceptional customer service;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills complemented by a natural talent for persuasion and an ability to hold stakeholders to task;
  • Ability to quickly review and understand complex multi-discipline technical issues and guide groups to consensus while at the same time possessing a productive hands-on work ethic and a natural ability to lead by example;
  • Critical problem solving, and analytical skills complemented by a creative and innovative mindset and an intuitive ability to deliver strategic and innovative solutions;
  • Strong background in project controls, project financials, scheduling and overall project reporting;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work well under pressure and motivation to achieve company targets.
