David Aplin Group, one of Canada's Best Managed Companies, has partnered with our client to recruit a Director of Communications based in Toronto, Ontario.

Job Summary:

The Communications Director will be responsible to drive a comprehensive strategic communications program across Canada, and will also be responsible for the strategy, planning, execution and measurement of communication initiatives in Canada; communicating key messages to defined target audiences to raise program awareness and generate battery collections, especially in the regulated provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba and Quebec. This will be achieved by generating positive interactions with Tier 1 stewards and collection partners, as well as coverage through effective media relations.


  • Develop and manage communications strategies, plans, projects, tactics, and core messages; make recommendations, identify opportunities, and leverage resources to achieve program objectives and outcomes
  • Oversee the translation of all external and internal communications to ensure voice and tone, terminology and quality
  • Ensure country-specific content and messages are accurately represented in all communications activities and are consistent with the organization’s mission and brand
  • Responsible for developing and supporting communications to key stakeholders, including government officials, stewards, collection customers, key opinion leaders, and media
  • Manage and coordinate the direction, design, and production of collateral, campaigns, newsletters, web and digital properties, presentations, and media strategies
  • In coordination with external PR firm, performs media relations work, including but not limited to: implementing plans, responding directly to media inquiries, researching facts and resources, and proactively communicating with trade and consumer media outlets to advance the mission of the organization in line with company’s initiatives as necessary
  • Serve as a media spokesperson, when necessary, for the organization, proactively building and maintaining close relationships with key industry influences (editors, journalists, opinion leaders)
  • As chief content creator, develop and communicate the company’s messages through articles, speaking abstracts, commentaries, editorials, social media items, interviews, white papers, case studies, press releases, presentations and other written elements
  • Participate in events and trade shows through speaking engagements and written content
  • Utilize media tracking and analytical tools to measure the value of communications activities and effectively adjust strategies and tactics to optimize results
  • Develop and execute crisis communication plans including arming executive management with proper key messages


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, journalism or a related field
  • Experience working with International or US-based companies is a plus
  • Working knowledge of software packages such as Microsoft Office Suite, workflow management software (Slack), social media software and other communication software/programs
  • Demonstrated planning skills with ability to think in the short and long-term and prioritize
  • Solid media relations experience and experience with digital communications
  • Exceptional writer - ability to research, comprehend and take complex concepts and manipulate into simplified communications
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with a strong service orientation
  • Impeccable messaging and editing skills are essential, especially in relation to QC-nuances. Success in the position is dependent on the clarity, speed and insight with which a candidate can take an issue or idea and translate it into the written word
  • Ability to closely monitor complex industry trends and initiatives and translate into clear, concise, and compelling copy
  • Ability to work autonomously, exercise discretion and work effectively with a wide degree of latitude
  • Exudes energy, a strong work ethic and passion for a mission yet are equally comfortable on teams where individual opinions must merge into consensus

Details & Benefits:

  • Travel up to 30% will be required to support and engage with the Canadian team, stakeholders, media, customers, and to participate in other Company activities
  • Permanent role 
  • Work is performed on site at our client's corporate office in Toronto (North York), ON.

$ 120,000 - 130,000 plus bonus
