The Alberta Lawyers Insurance Association (ALIA) manages the insurance program for Alberta lawyers. Similar to malpractice insurance, the program provides professional liability insurance to Alberta lawyers. The Alberta Lawyers Insurance Exchange (ALIEX), managed by ALIA, is a reciprocal insurance exchange that provides professional liability insurance for all practicing lawyers in Alberta. ALIEX is able to provide lawyers with a reliable and permanent source of insurance.
The Claims Examiner is responsible and accountable for investigating, assessing, managing and settling negligence and misappropriation of trust property claims made against lawyers. Tasks performed by the Claims Examiner include research of applicable statutes and common law precedents, negotiating terms of coverage with, and providing advice to, lawyers and assessing liability and damage exposure by gathering information from various sources. In this role you will be offered, and expected, to participate in on-going professional development programs and attend educational seminars relating to professional liability insurance.
The Claims Examiner will possess a CIP or FCIP with an ability to obtain and maintain minimum Level 2 Adjuster certification through AIC, or be an active member of the Alberta Bar. The Claims Examiner will also bring 3-5 years of practical experience in a related field of insurance. Excellent time management, prioritization, organizational, analytical and communications skills are key characteristics of the Claims Examiner, and familiarity with the Alberta Insurance Act is a must. Extensive knowledge of professional liability insurance is considered a strong asset. The Claims Examiner must also be a collaborative individual and highly ethical to fit in with the culture of ALIA.
