The Accounting & Finance Manager is responsible for managing the financial operations of under the direction of the Director of Finance. The Accounting & Finance Manager leads the daily operations of the Finance team and provides leadership with respect to development, evaluation and implementation of financial processes.

  • To motivate, evaluate, coach and mentor the Finance staff
  • Assists DOF in reporting to the Finance Committee and may represent the company to external stakeholders in the absence of and with guidance from the DOF
  • To assist the Director of Finance in analyzing growth opportunities in programs or site management
  • Under the direction of the DOF, develop, implement, and monitor operating and capital budgets and assist in developing and implementing business plans in each of the business units that are reflective of the longer-term strategies, objectives and priorities of the organization.
  • To assist in the development of clear and measurable accountabilities for delivery of stated objectives
Operations and Control
  • To ensure appropriate and satisfactory systems are in place for monitoring group financial performance against plans and budgets
  • To monitor financial performance of all business units and advise the DOF of significant variances and recommend appropriate remedial actions
  • To maintain an effective system of controls throughout the group, covering financial as well as non-financial controls
  • To ensure that operating objectives and standards of performance for the Finance Department are clearly understood and achieved by employees
  • To ensure that the Company and its businesses (9 in total) comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and, where appropriate, best practice
  • To ensure that appropriate standards of conduct are established and complied with complete monthly bank reconciliations for all accounts
  • Oversee all Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activity
  • Work together with Payroll & Benefits Coordinator to ensure Payroll transactions are accurate, complete and processed as required
  • Prepare journal entries, including month-end entries and year-end adjustments
  • Ensure all reconciliations are completed as required and provided to DOF for monthly review
  • Allocate costs across entities using appropriate methodologies
  • Prepare audit working papers for all entities and work with external auditors in the conduct of the annual audits
Communication and Reporting
  • To liaise with the DOF and keep him/her informed of all financial issues
  • To develop and provide suitable financial and operational reports to allow the DOF, CEO and the Board to assess the performance of the business and the achievement of the agreed strategy and budget
  • To maintain an appropriate and satisfactory system for financial management reporting on a monthly basis and deliver financial reports to managers monthly
  • As needed, assist the DOF in managing external relationships with WRHA officials, Manitoba Family Services and Housing officials, Boards of managed facilities, staff/managers at financial institutions, other vendors and service providers and the Mennonite constituency
  • To direct and oversee the daily operations of the Finance department, ensuring its departmental goals and objectives are aligned with the corporate strategic plan as communicated by the DOF, and work closely with the HR and IT departments in meeting their goals and objectives
  • Monitor performance and perform regular performance reviews of Finance staff
Physical Demands
  • This is an office position requiring sitting and reading computer screens for extended periods of time along with continuous attention to detail

  • Ability to work in a dynamic healthcare environment requiring flexibility to frequently changing priorities and requirements
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Directly supervises two Accounting Clerks (CUPE), one Financial Analyst (Non-Union), and any casual positions that may be required. Indirectly supervises resident accounting activities of Receptionist (directly reports to Senior Administrative & Fundraising Coordinator)
  • Post-Secondary Degree in Accounting & Finance
  • CPA or legacy CA, CGA, CMA designations or enrollment in the CPA program
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior accounting position preparing and monitoring budgets and monthly financial statements in addition to managing associated full cycle accounting
  • Previous demonstrated experience and demonstrated ability in supervising, evaluating, coaching and leading staff
  • Above average computer skills utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel together with demonstrated experience with commonly used financial software packages (Sage, Financial Edge, etc.) with Microsoft Dynamics experience preferred
  • Effective problem-solving ability
  • Ability to assist in the development, and fully implement and monitor annual budgets
  • Demonstrates ability to prepare and explain detailed internal financial statements for multiple entities
  • Demonstrates ability to coordinate annual financial audits and work with auditors to prepare Audited Financial Statements for all stakeholders within established deadlines
  • Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, managers, and outside agencies
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrates ability to lead, mentor and develop a cohesive team
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain confidentiality in all resident/family/staff related matters
