Aplin has partnered with an established Canadian manufacturer serving the nuclear and highly regulated industrial sectors to recruit an experienced Project Engineer.
This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanical engineer who combines strong technical capability with project coordination experience in a heavy manufacturing, fabrication, nuclear, pressure vessel, or similarly regulated environment.
The Project Engineer will serve as the technical lead for assigned projects, coordinating requirements across Engineering, Quality, Procurement, Production, Project Management, customers, and external design authorities. The position is responsible for ensuring customer and contractual requirements are accurately interpreted, translated into executable engineering requirements, and delivered in accordance with applicable codes, quality standards, schedules, and project commitments.
Working closely with the Project Manager, this individual will effectively function as the technical project manager, owning the engineering and technical coordination required to move projects successfully from contract review through procurement, fabrication, testing, and final delivery.
The Opportunity
The Project Engineer will establish and maintain the technical baseline for assigned projects, ensuring Engineering, Quality, Procurement, and Production remain aligned with customer specifications, applicable codes, and contractual requirements.
This is not primarily a mechanical design or drafting position. It is a hands-on project engineering role requiring the ability to understand complex technical requirements, coordinate multiple disciplines, resolve manufacturing and quality issues, and make sound engineering decisions in support of project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Review customer technical specifications, scopes of work, drawings, purchase orders, codes, standards, and contractual requirements.
- Develop a thorough understanding of project technical requirements during the contract review and project planning stages.
- Prepare Manufacturing and Inspection Test Plans (MITPs) in collaboration with Engineering, Production, and Quality.
- Develop and review technical specifications and scopes of work for suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring customer, quality, regulatory, and code requirements are appropriately flowed down.
- Act as a key technical interface between Project Management, Engineering, Procurement, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, Production, customers, suppliers, and external design authorities.
- Develop and maintain engineering deliverable schedules and monitor critical technical milestones.
- Identify and resolve technical issues that could affect project cost, schedule, quality, compliance, or manufacturability.
- Lead technical risk identification and support the development of appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Participate in customer technical meetings, project reviews, and design reviews as required.
- Coordinate customer technical comments, engineering responses, and approvals to support production schedules and project milestones.
- Review, evaluate, and disposition Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and other technical discrepancies in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and customer requirements.
- Prepare Corrective Action Reports (CARs) for significant or recurring technical issues.
- Provide practical, technically sound responses to shop-floor engineering questions while minimizing disruption to production schedules.
- Develop test procedures and operating manuals for applicable project requirements.
- Participate in design reviews and provide practical recommendations regarding testing, manufacturability, and execution requirements.
- Identify special or supplementary requirements for materials, equipment, and services and ensure these requirements are incorporated into procurement packages.
- Prepare and review engineering calculations for customer projects, capital projects, and quality-related requirements.
- Coordinate with external design authorities as required to support technical acceptance, Professional Engineer review, and certification.
- Review fabrication drawings for compliance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and project requirements.
- Prepare Design Deviation Requests (DDRs), Concession Applications (CAs), and related technical documentation.
- Maintain appropriate configuration control throughout project execution.
- Maintain accurate and complete engineering project documentation to support manufacturing, audits, customer deliverables, and project closeout.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
- 8+ years of progressive engineering experience, ideally within nuclear, heavy manufacturing, fabrication, pressure vessel, power generation, or another highly regulated industrial environment.
- Nuclear industry experience is strongly preferred.
- EIT or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Professional Engineers Ontario is preferred.
- Strong understanding of project engineering practices within a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
- Sound knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and manufacturing processes.
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, technical specifications, purchase orders, codes, standards, and customer requirements.
- Working knowledge of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code requirements and related standards, including ASME Sections II, III and VIII, CSA N285, CSA N299 and B51, is a strong asset.
- Experience reviewing and dispositioning NCRs and preparing deviations, concessions, corrective actions, or similar engineering documentation.
- Experience developing technical specifications, scopes of work, test procedures, engineering reports, and supplier technical requirements.
- Ability to review engineering calculations and technical documentation for completeness and readiness for Professional Engineer review.
- Strong understanding of material, equipment, fabrication, and procurement specifications.
- SolidWorks and PDM experience is considered an asset.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, including Excel for engineering calculations and technical data analysis.
What You Bring
You are a technically strong mechanical engineer who understands how engineering decisions affect procurement, fabrication, quality, testing, and ultimately project delivery. You are comfortable working directly with manufacturing teams and can translate complex customer and regulatory requirements into practical solutions.
You bring strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple technical priorities in a deadline-driven project environment. Just as importantly, you can communicate effectively with engineers, project managers, quality professionals, production personnel, suppliers, customers, and senior stakeholders.
You understand that successful project engineering requires more than producing technical documentation—it requires maintaining technical alignment across the entire project team and resolving issues before they affect quality, cost, schedule, or customer commitments.
If you are an experienced Project Engineer looking to apply your mechanical engineering expertise within complex, highly regulated manufacturing projects, Aplin welcomes the opportunity to speak with you.
