Our client is seeking an experienced Law Clerk to join their Medical Defence team. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented legal professional with a strong background in civil litigation and a genuine interest in health law. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive support to legal professionals handling complex medical defence matters while working in a collaborative, team-focused environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the intake of new matters and related file-opening procedures.
- Communicate and liaise with clients, physicians, medical experts, opposing counsel, and other professionals as required.
- Review legal files and medical records to gain a thorough understanding of each case, identify next steps, and ensure all critical deadlines are tracked and met.
- Independently prepare a variety of legal documents, including medical chronologies, expert briefs, court documents, correspondence, and memoranda, ensuring compliance with court requirements and client expectations.
- Organize, maintain, and track all file documentation while proactively following up on outstanding items.
- Support legal professionals in preparing for all stages of the litigation process, including interlocutory applications, questioning, trials, and appeals.
Qualifications
- Legal Administrative Assistant Diploma required; Paralegal or Law Clerk certification from a recognized post-secondary institution is preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in civil litigation with a strong understanding of the litigation process.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team and take direction from senior professionals.
- Strong proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with medical terminology is considered an asset.
- Experience with eDiscovery platforms or processes is an asset.
