Legal Assistant – Criminal Law
Edmonton, AB | Full-Time, In-Office
Aplin is pleased to partner with our client in the search for a highly capable and proactive Legal Assistant to join a well-established law practice in Edmonton. This role supports two lawyers and is ideally suited to someone with experience in criminal law matters, with a strong focus on independence, file ownership, and ensuring smooth day-to-day workflow management.
The firm is also open to candidates with family law experience who are interested in expanding into criminal law.

The ideal candidate will act as a true “anchor” in the office—proactively managing files and supporting lawyers at a high level, not just completing tasks. Key Responsibilities
- Manage and support a full range of criminal law matters across all areas under the Criminal Code.
- Run files independently and anticipate lawyer needs
- Prepare, draft, and manage legal documents and court filings
- Maintain accurate file management, organization, and deadlines
- Liaise with clients, court offices, and third parties as required
- Support billing, time entry, and general administrative coordination
- Assist 2 lawyers while maintaining strong attention to detail and prioritization
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Strong experience as a legal assistant and criminal law experience preferred
- Family law experience will also be considered
- Confident working independently and managing full files
- Highly organized, proactive, and able to think ahead
- Comfortable in a role that requires ownership
- Strong communication skills and professional judgment
- Experience in a mid-sized or smaller firm environment is an asset
Key Requirements
- Ability to manage and run legal files with minimal supervision
- Strong understanding of legal procedures and file flow (not just administrative support)
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume practice
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Experience with legal software such as PC Law is an asset (not required)

- 100% in-office role

- Hours: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (No regular overtime expected)

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $60,000 – $95,000, depending on experience
- Comprehensive benefits package (above industry standard)
- Annual discretionary bonus (typically Christmas)
- 3 – 4 weeks vacation to start
