Our client, a leading Canadian financial services organization backed by a well-established national enterprise, is seeking a Senior Analyst, Commodity Tax to join their growing finance team.

This role supports a highly regulated banking environment and offers exposure to complex indirect tax matters within a financial institution setting. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring compliance, advising internal stakeholders, and supporting ongoing process and system enhancements.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual GST/HST/QST returns for a financial institution classified as a Selected Listed Financial Institution (SLFI) and related entities
  • Prepare, review, and reconcile quarterly commodity tax journal entries
  • Act as a subject matter expert on indirect/commodity tax matters, providing ongoing advisory support to internal business units, including review of vendor contracts
  • Compile information from multiple financial systems and business units to support filings, audits, and inquiries from tax authorities and external auditors
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain commodity tax accounting procedures, internal controls, and standard operating procedures
  • Monitor changes in commodity tax legislation and interpretations, assess impact, and communicate implications to stakeholders
  • Support ad hoc initiatives and cross-functional projects as required

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of indirect/commodity tax experience, ideally within:
    • Banking or financial services
    • Insurance, pensions, or financial institutions
    • Big 4 or large professional services firms with financial services exposure
  • Strong understanding of how commodity tax rules differ for financial institutions versus non-financial organizations
  • Experience preparing GST/HST/QST returns in a complex, regulated environment
  • Solid knowledge of accounting principles as they relate to indirect tax
  • Experience working with large financial systems (e.g., SAP)
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain tax matters to non-tax stakeholders
  • CPA designation is an asset
