Director, Planning, and Development

Aplin Executive has embarked on a search with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which includes Fort McMurray as its urban center, to recruit a Director, Planning, and Development. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the position will encompass a range of responsibilities related to urban and regional planning, land development, and community growth. You will lead and mentor municipal managers regarding comprehensive planning and implementation of policies. As the Director, you will also provide leadership, expertise, and advice to the regional council, and internal and external stakeholders. You will lead a team that will guide the development of the departmental budget, policies, processes, and projections.
The Director of Planning and Development will be responsible for strategic planning, land use regulations, and ensuring that growth and development align with the municipality's vision, sustainability goals, and legal requirements. The ideal candidate will provide support on complex projects and foster the use of technology to manage Planning and Development data and systems. An effective negotiator and collaborator, the Director will balance the needs of growth, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in engineering, planning, or architecture combined with at least 10 years of concentrated and progressive experience in planning and development with a minimum of five years at a management level.
Experience working in a public sector environment with unionized and non-unionized employees will be considered an asset.
