Primary Accountability:
Lead the Field team for the construction of the  Regional Hospital Centre. This role is directly responsible for effectively managing all construction phases, leading and developing a team consisting of, but not limited to, Superintendents on standard systems and processes, means and methods, to achieve the project goals through proper planning and implementation. The General Superintendent shall always support our Core Values and Safety as a top priority.

Reporting To: Field Operations Manager (FOM)

This opportunity is available to candidates in Calgary, Edmonton, and Red Deer.

Responsibilities:
Administration:
  • Update the Field Operations Manager (FOM) on a regular basis on the ongoing status of the project.
  • Drive results, project goals, and profits through strong leadership of Project Launch and Set Up
  • Lead and attend regularly scheduled manpower planning meetings with Operations leadership teams
  • Assist with the hiring, assignment, retention and conflict management of Superintendents for the project in conjunction with the Project Executive and HR
  • Perform regular reviews with Superintendents of manpower requirements and planning to ensure accuracy and efficacy in workforce planning
  • Be a resource, morale booster, and mentor for all project Superintendents to pursue further learning and skill improvement and advancement within CB
  • Evaluate the performance of Superintendents and assist with the training and development of future Superintendents
Project Planning and Scheduling:
  • GS position includes providing leadership, direction, and training on all the below-listed elements.
  • Facilitate and participate in project start-up and close out meetings.
  • Lead site setup, temporary facilities, and overall site planning.
  • Provide advice during project mobilization, start-up, construction and demobilization.
  • Ensure an efficient site organizational setup, including site office trailers, visual communication boards, and evidence of all company Standardized processes and systems.
  • Ensure that the site is practicing the Last Planner System to ensure that we are fully maximizing seasonal weather, subcontractor manpower, and deliveries, to perform the work in the shortest possible time.
  • Ensure the site is practicing Lean construction methods, to ensure an efficient work site.
  • Provide advice on site layout issues (i.e. underground locates).
  • Assist and review structural framing systems, crane selection, pour schedules etc.
  • Participate in site meetings, from time to time and as requested and necessary (i.e. trade start-up, weekly CB / consultants, pre-pour, Superintendent/Foremen).
  • Review the pre-punch list and final punch list, as requested, with the Superintendent to ensure a satisfactory project close-out.
  • Assist with coordination of seasonal (winter) site requirements.
  • Assist, review and provide advice on on-site issues, means and methods, critical lifts, etc.
  • Prepare a written site visit inspection report and forward it to the Superintendent and Project Manager for their respective review, follow-up, and action if required.
  • Understand the project contract and budget, and assist the Superintendent and Project Manager in the assignment of additional resources to the project as deemed necessary for an expeditious workflow.
  • Cultivate and ensure compatible and mutually beneficial on-site working relationships with all personnel, including clients, consultants, sub-trades, suppliers, own forces personnel and the public in general.
  • Perform regular site audits to ensure compliance with as-builts, maintenance, and effective document control.
Cost Management:
  • Verify the Superintendent's receipt of information to effectively manage project costs (budget, productivity control, etc.) and ensure an understanding of the same.
  • Ensure the Superintendents work with the Project Management team monthly to forecast, capture, track, and manage all project costs.
  • Ensure that all Rentals have proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment, and ensure they are returned in a timely manner.
  • Provide guidance for Superintendents with respect to Timecard and Purchase Order coding and documentation.
  • Quality Control & Close Out:
  • Ensure Quality Control remains an utmost importance, project site control documents are set up on-site and that they are being completed and kept up to date.
Qualifications:
  • A post-secondary construction-related diploma and/or a journeyman trade Red Seal certificate plus a minimum of 15 years of related experience.
  • A thorough knowledge of all aspects of construction, including, but not limited to, reading and interpretation of drawings and specifications, all trade disciplines, materials, equipment, weather, trade agreements, trade jurisdiction, negotiations, engineering, accurate material take-offs, purchasing and cost control, schedules, QA/QC and safety required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, organizational and supervisory skills are essential as well as a proven ability to establish and meet cost effective.
