Aplin has partnered with a leader in underwater acoustics sensors to hire a Senior Electronics Engineer to join their growing team in Dartmouth, NS! Reporting to the Director of Systems, you will lead the design, development, and implementation of electronic systems and components for various acoustic sensing projects.

Responsibilities:
  • Leading the design and development of electronic systems, circuits, and components for a range of acoustic products
  • Defining electronic specifications, architecture, and requirements based on project objectives, customer needs, and regulatory standards
  • Designing and simulating analog and digital circuits using industry-standard tools such as SPICE, Altium, OrCAD, or EMTP
  • Selecting and evaluating electronic components, including microcontrollers, sensors, power supplies, and communication interfaces, considering performance, reliability, and cost
  • Developing high-performance electronics designs with a particular emphasis on achieving low noise, low power, and high reliability
  • Developing and prototyping PCB layouts, ensuring optimal placement and routing for signal integrity, power distribution, and thermal management
  • Develop testing systems and procedures. Conducting thorough testing and validation of electronic hardware, including functional testing, performance characterization, and environmental testing (e.g., temperature, humidity, vibration)
  • Collaborating with firmware engineers to integrate electronic hardware with embedded software and ensure seamless operation of the overall system
  • Working closely with mechanical engineers to ensure proper integration of electronic hardware into product enclosures, housings, and assemblies
  • Troubleshooting and debugging electronic hardware issues during development, testing, and production phases, implementing effective solutions in a timely manner
  • Mentoring junior engineers and providing technical guidance
  • Liaising with customers and suppliers as necessary
  • Staying current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in electronic design and applying relevant advancements to improve project outcomes
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field. A master’s degree would be preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electronic design and development, with a focus on hardware design and PCB layout
  • Experience with acoustic systems, passive acoustic amplification electronics, audio or sonar digitization and digital interfaces is highly desired
  • Hands-on experience with electronic measurement and testing equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and logic analyzers
  • Prototyping, testing, and verification of electronic sub-systems at PCB, unit, and sub-system level
  • Proficiency with computing environments like MATLAB, Python, or Mathematica for simulation, automation, or data analysis
  • Understanding component selection and related issues, encompassing considerations such as noise performance, obsolescence, and environmental factors (e.g., REACH, RoHS, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze complex electronic systems and identify root causes of issues
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven leadership abilities, including the ability to mentor junior engineers and lead projects
  • Strong understanding of analog and digital circuit design principles, including amplifiers, filters, ADCs, DACs, microcontrollers, and communication protocols (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART)
  • Proficiency in electronic design tools and software, such as schematic capture, PCB layout, and simulation tools (e.g., Altium Designer, SPICE)
  • Proficiency with electronics lab test equipment
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams)
