Reporting to the CEO, the Financial Controller is responsible for all aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecast preparation, and the development of internal control policies and procedures. The Finance Controller will also lead and direct the accounting and administration teams. This position will support the company’s vision, mission, and core values in all functions.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage the daily operations of the accounting department, including cash management, financial reporting, accounts payable and receivable, the general ledger, payroll, revenue and expenditure variance analysis, and other accounting operations.
  • Manages and provides leadership to employees; provides coaching and feedback in accordance with the performance management process.
  • Coordinate and direct the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts.
  • Monitor financial performance against budgets and explore, analyze, and report variances for discussion and long-term planning, highlighting areas of concern and outlining action plans.
  • Prepare, analyze, and present timely monthly financial statements and other reports.
  • Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting.
  • Research technical accounting issues for compliance.
  • Coordinate the year-end audit process, including the review and/or preparation of working papers, schedules, analyses, and other required documentation.
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
  • Manage and comply with local, provincial, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Maintain effective and efficient accounting systems, processes, and practices based on recognized accounting principles, policies, procedures, and guidelines while ensuring compliance.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives across the existing business and identify opportunities to improve efficiencies operationally and financially
  • Build strong working relationships with operational leadership and employees to better understand where value-added projects can be initiated.
  • Manage financial banking and external professional relationships
  • Responsible for our financial and administrative IT platforms
  • Additional duties as necessary
  • Accomplishes finance human resource objectives by selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, and counselling team members; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job contributions; recommending compensation actions; and adhering to policies and procedures.

Requirements:
  • 5 years of overall combined accounting and finance experience
  • Proven working experience as a financial controller is preferred.
  • A post-secondary degree in a related field (business administration or finance). CPA or CMA preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures
  • Experience with creating financial statements, general ledger functions, and the month-end and year-end close processes
  • Significant experience with ERP solutions, technology, and accounting software
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills to work cross-functionally throughout the organization
  • Able to work independently and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience leading teams and/or having supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with excellent analytical and technical skills
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills
