Our Humboldt-based client is responsible for solid waste management across 11,000 km, servicing 27,000 people. The General Manager is accountable for all aspects of daily operation, including business planning and financial management, health and safety initiatives, environmental and regulatory matters, asset management and upkeep, public engagement and client services, and more.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee management of approximately 50 employees, ensuring smooth operation of four departments: Administration, Landfills/Transfer Stations, Recycling, and Service/Dispatch
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, including all relevant changes to provincial and federal solid waste and recycling programs
  • Cultivate open and collaborative communication within the organization and with the Board of Authority, municipalities, regulatory bodies, etc. Participate in public education initiatives
  • Assist auditors in preparation of annual financial statements, adhering to Canadian accounting standards for non-profit organizations
  • Responsible for business planning and strategic planning, along with the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets for the acceptance by the Board of Directors
  • It is critical that the General Manager review and fully understand all Operating Permits, Operation Plans, and Emergency Response Plans for all twenty locations, and manage operations accordingly
Qualifications
  • SWANA Certification Landfill Basics AND Manager of Landfill Operations courses must be completed within six months of hire
  • Previous landfill/environmental experience is an asset
  • Relevant post-secondary is preferred, with priority given to candidate with a background in Environmental Engineering, Municipal Administration, Business/Accounting, and Human Resources
  • Demonstrated communication and relationship building skills are required
